My last post about workplace ergonomics provoked quile a lot of unexpected response. If you haven’t read it, it’s a checklist to help set up a healthy work environment and avoid back and neck problems. At the end of the article I also suggest taking regular mini breaks to spend a few moments focusing on your posture and breathing. The science behind it is simple. Give your body and mind regular breaks and you’ll prevent unnecessary stress building up and leading to more serious physical problems.
A few people asked me how they can focus on what they’re supposed to be doing while they’re taking breaks to think about good posture and breathing. Actually the breaks need not be longer than ten seconds or so, but it begs the question: when are you more likely to make a mistake? When you’re focused on being aware of your body and your physical surroundings, or when you let your mind just drift off and do whatever it wants?
Developing that awareness of how you feel physically is something you can do RIGHT NOW to sustainably improve your health. In exactly the same way as if you’re out running or playing tennis it could prevent you playing through and worsening an injury, thinking about your posture in this way will help you prevent back and neck pain. Eventually it will become second nature. You’ll feel better and you’ll have much more energy throughout the day.
It’s really not difficult to start feeling much better. You don’t need an expensive gym membership and it won’t take long. It’s simply building a habit of listening to your body and how you feel, and taking action on that. If you have a problem then get some professional advice as soon as possible.
